Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a credit union?
- A credit union is a not-for-profit, consumer cooperative financial institution that is owned and operated by its members.
- How are credit unions different from banks?
- Banks are commercial businesses established for the purpose of making money by providing a service for customers. They are controlled by their stockholders who are also the primary beneficiaries of the bank’s profit.
In contrast, credit unions are cooperatives entirely focused on meeting the needs of their members. Decisions are made based on whether they benefit members, rather than focusing on making money for stockholders. Their not-for-profit status allows profit earned to be returned to the members in the form of lower loan rates, higher deposit rates and lower fees. - How are credit unions operated?
- Credit unions are owned and operated by their members. When you join a credit union you become a member and have a vote in the direction the credit union takes. Members elect a volunteer board of directors who set policy for the credit union. Day-to-day operations are handled by paid professionals and governed by state and federal regulations. Federal credit unions are charted by NCUA (National Credit Union Administration) and are insured by the NCUSIF.
- Who can join TVFCU?
- TVFCU serves anyone living, working, worshiping, volunteering or attending school in the 13 counties surrounding Chattanooga: Bledsoe, Bradley, Grundy, Hamilton, Marion, McMinn, Meigs, Polk, Rhea, and Sequatchie Counties in Tennessee; and Catoosa, Dade, and Walker Counties in Georgia.
