Story Updated: Aug 7, 2009

QUINCY, IL -- Less people buying new homes could mean more people fixing and improving theirs.

KHQA's Rajah Maples checked in with a local fabric store, where she found that to be the case.

Mary Miller works as a window treatment consultant for Mr. K's Fabric Shop in Quincy. And believe it or not, the recession has definitely helped business here.

Miller said, "We've been through 2 or 3 downturns in economies and have benefited actually, because we find when people aren't doing building that they do upgrade their look in their house. They're maybe spending more time at home, so we find that it kind of helps our business."

And customers are doing just that by turning to valancing, drapery, sheers or from dozens of choices when it comes to hard-window treatments -- all in an effort to improve the look of a room or to serve a certain function or need, whether it be privacy or light control.

"Over the years, there have been many changes and mostly changes for the better," Miller said. "A lot of child-friendly, user-friendly options. A lot of powerization, where tings are done with remotes.//10:28:44 There are so many patterns available now that weren't available a few years ago."

Mr. K's also finds itself changing or improving upholstery on furniture.

Miller said, "People do it for a number of reasons, whether it be for comfort or sentimentality."

Nice observation. It turns out that I myself is an example of it. Well, though it is a crisis but I'vedecided to decorate the house a little bit. Just to do the things you've just mentioned in the article. It is funny. By the way, I advise everybody who is engaged into repairing and decorating to find a book about the impact of colours. As for me, I've found such at the book search engine http://pdf.rapid4me.com .If we do something new let's do it really better.
